The first of our boxer legacy/profile focus will be on retired former Champion, David Kane.
A 16 year career saw Kane rise to dizzying heights. His style was pure boxer. He used an up right stance that utilised his jab and neutralised his opponents power shots. His rise threw the Cruiserweight division was impressive. After just 14 contests he won the Midlands Cruiserweight Championship.
After 21 fights he was English Champion. He made several successful and dominant defences of his English title. His 11th defence came against hard hitting Roy Custler. Custler landed a beautiful uppercut in round 3, Kane couldn’t recover. He was stopped in round 4. His title lost, and career in tatters.
Kane eventually clawed back his standing. He beat some top names in dominant fashion and earned a shot at his old English title. Custler dominated the exchanges but struggled to land anything worth mentioning. Kane made it to the end and gave a decent account of himself. However, Custler won on by 3 points.
Kane fought two more times and then hung up his gloves. To many set backs had cost him time. He will always be viewed as a fighter that had real talent but failed at critical times.
He currently runs his own gym in Coventry.
