Watkin was looking like a bulldozer, smashing his way through the Cruiserweight division. He had impressive wins against really good opposition. His power seemed phenomenal at the weight. He was ready to break into the top 10.
Tonight he faced of against Pearson, a seemingly unimpressive fighter that not many had heard of. Personally, I predicted that Watkin would win in round 2. It was a warm up fight that would have lead to a much bigger spring clash.
Watkin started well. He was putting together combinations that would please any purist. He won round 1, 2 and 3. In round for he was dropped by a right left combo, but seemed off balance. Round 7 and 8 had people worried. The fight had completely turned around. Pearson looked like the premier fighter. Watkin came out for round 9 looking like a man on a mission. He immediately walked onto a right cross and crumbled to the canvas.
He said “What can I say? I didn’t expect to be here talking to you about a loss. I got careless. I’m sorry”.
Now, it seems, It is Pearson that will break into the top 10. At 22 years old, Watkin certainly isn’t finished.
