It was the fight that everyone wanted to see, and it really delivered.
Chambers had ruled the Cruiserweight division with relative ease. He was the heavy favourite. Meers had the popularity vote and came in as a real crowd pleaser.
The fight started with action from the very first bell. Round one saw Meers dazzle with lightning hand speed and elegant footwork. Chambers pressed forward but repeatedly missed the target by the smallest of margins.
To Chambers relief, the second round belonged to him. He picked his shots better and landed some hard shots. Meers face showed signs of the action.
round 3 seemed to be even and lacked the action of the previous rounds. Both men jabbed well and often. It was a very difficult round to score.
Chambers rushed out for round 4 and opened with a 9 punch combination that seemed to fluster Meers. Meers jabbed and moved and used superior head movement to his advantage.
The 5th round was the most action packed. Meers landed a 1-2 hook that sent the Champion to the canvas. Chambers got onto his feet quickly but looked surprised. Both men stood toe to toe and traded blows. Meers got the better of the exchanges but showed signs of tiring.
Round 6 didn’t even come close to matching the previous round. By now, both men had thrown so many punches that both look exhausted. A rest round would be the best description.
Meers came out fast for round 7 and backed the Champion against the ropes. Chambers fought fire with fire. The crowd cheered the action and the fighters responded to the appreciation by trading once more. A 4 punch combo put the Champion down. He narrowly missed the count. Meers achieved his title dream in dramatic fashion.
Meers “I want to thank everyone for coming. Credit to Chambers. That was a tough fight and I’m sure he will be back. The hard work paid off. My team also deserve credit because without them I wouldn’t be here. They turn me into the best I can be”
Chambers “Well done to him. I felt good in training. Everything was going well. I believe that things could have gone better as the fight went on. I’m a late starter, everyone knows that. I think I should have started a little earlier but we’ll done to him. I appreciate you all coming down. I’m sorry I couldn’t get the win”.
the impact of this fight will be massive. Meers is a completely different personality and will really shake things up. With recent results, it’s fair to say that he is the EBUs biggest star and he likes to fight often. The times of inactive Champions could be over. I look forward to seeing Meers journey as Champion.
